The meaning of Prudence: wisdom in action
The symbol of Prudence has been associated with Prudential from its foundation in 1848. Prudence is one of the four cardinal virtues, together with Justice, Fortitude and Temperance.
Prudence combines the qualities of memoria (preserving the past), intelligentia (understanding the present) and providential (looking forward to the future). The virtue of prudence therefore represents insight and sound judgement and demonstrates wisdom in action.
Since Greek and Roman times Prudence has been personified as a woman. She usually carries an arrow, a mirror and a serpent.
